The continued cruelty of humanity is draining
I’m halfway through the Code Sw!tch Podcast episode on “Hot weather kills. Who gets protected?” and it is astonishing how people cannot take perspective or overcome greedy impulses.
The first story is about roofers dying because they don’t have access to rest, water, and shade during their work hours, and are forced to work in dangerous heat conditions that are hazardous to humans. Not every state has laws to protect them, and it is disheartening that we cannot rely on individuals to do the right thing, so we have to wait for a law to be passed.
What if we required the bosses/CEOs/supervisors to be in the same conditions for a week before they deny or implement policies and procedures that are detrimental to health or that workers are trying to fight against? Would they still behave the same? I hope not.
